Health Science

Who is eligible:

In order for students to be able to experience success in the Health Science Pathway program, the following student prerequisites are in place:

  • C or higher in English (the previous year)
  • C or higher in Math (last course taken)
  • OR Instructor Approval

Projects and Opportunities:

The second year students participate in a "Fall Tour Day" at PRCC in Hattiesburg. PRCC's Allied Health Center opens their doors to allow health science students in our tri-county area to observe the different career and technical programs offered. The programs include: Dental Hygiene, Physical Therapy Assisting, Occupational Therapy Assisting, Radiology Technology, Respiratory Therapy, Dental Assisting, Medical Laboratory Technology, and Surgical Technology.

The students tour the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College's Mortuary Science Department every year. The students view instruments used in the embalming process. The students learn the procedures used for embalming. Caskets are available for the students to observe.

Guest speakers are always welcome in the classroom. Mississippi's organ donation/ recovery center (MORA) provides a guest speaker to come and speak to the class about organ donation. Forrest General Hospital's Hospice has their nurses and social workers speak to the class about death and dying. The Poplarville Fire Department discuss safety procedures and CPR techniques with the students.

Blood drives are hosted by the health science class twice every year. The students are able to observe phlebotomist in their field of work.
